COVAX

COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX)[1] is the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-Accelerator), co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside key delivery partner UNICEF. In the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization Revolving Fund for Access to Vaccines is the recognized procurement agent for COVAX.[2] COVAX was also supported by the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access (CVIA).[3]
History
In 2020, UNICEF “established a landmark joint charter with the World Economic Forum in which 18 airline and logistics companies pledged to prioritize the transport of COVID-19 vaccines procured through the COVAX Facility”[4]
As of April 7, 2021, COVAX had reached supply agreements for 7 COVID-19 vaccine candidates, including:[5]
- AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine
- Janssen COVID-19 vaccine
- Novavax COVID-19 vaccine
- Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine
- Sanofi-GlaxoSmithKline COVID-19 vaccine
On April 14, 2021, COVAX hosted a workshop titled "Multivalent COVID vaccines to help address emergence of variants: CMC and clinical implications." Participants included representatives from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Health Canada, Bavarian Nordic, Merck, CEPI, Seqirus, the University of Geneva, Sanofi, Moderna, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and the WHO.[6]
Advanced Market Commitment
The COVID-19 Vaccines Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC) is a financing instrument allowing donors to finance the delivery of vaccines to nations out of the COVAX Facility.
One World Protected
COVAX AMC was presented at the Gavi COVAX AMC 2021 Investment Opportunity Launch Event, otherwise named One World Protected, on April 15, 2021.[7] The virtual event was hosted by José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board; U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken; and acting United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Gloria Steele.[8]
