Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada

The Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada (CFJA) is a Canadian federal government agency within the Department of Justice Canada.

History

CFJA was created in 1978 "to safeguard the independence of the judiciary and put federally appointed judges at arm’s length from the Department of Justice."[1]

Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould appointed Marc A. Giroux as Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs on June 21, 2017.[1:1][2] Giroux was re-appointed on June 21, 2022.[2:1]

Organization

CJFA is listed as being part of the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association's network.[3] It is also a member organization of the International Organization for Judicial Training (IOJT)[4] and a partner of the National Judicial Institute (NJI).[5]

CFJA provides administrative support to the Canadian Judicial Council (CJC),[6] and hosts the Action Committee on Modernizing Court Operations (formerly known as the Action Committee on Court Operations in Response to COVID-19).[7]
