New York Times

The New York Times (NYT), previously called the New-York Daily Times and the New-York Times, is an American newspaper based in New York City. It is owned and published by The New York Times Company.[1]

History

The first issue of the paper, originally called the New-York Daily Times, was published on September 18, 1851.[1:1] In 1857, the paper changed its name to the New-York Times,[2] eventually dropping the hyphen and adopting its current name on December 1, 1896.[3]

Adolph Ochs purchased the New York Times in 1896 for $75,000 and formed the New York Times Company.[4][5]

Ochs died in 1935,[6] passing control of the Times to his son-in-law, Arthur Hays Sulzberger.[7]

World War II

Sulzberger reportedly instructed editors at the New York Times to "bury news of the Nazi genocide on the back pages, and to tone down or eliminate references to the fact that the victims were Jews," out of fear that "if the Times reported what was happening to the Jews in Europe, someone might accuse it of being a 'Jewish newspaper.'"[8]

In 1961, Sulzberger was succeeded as publisher by his son-in-law, Orvil Dryfoos. Dryfoos died of "a heart ailment" in May 1963,[9] with his brother-in-law Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger taking his place as publisher.[10]

COVID-19

During the declared COVID-19 pandemic, the NYT cited data from the COVID Tracking Project in its articles.[11]

On September 24, 2022, Skyhorse Publishing president Tony Lyons appeared on Steve Bannon's War Room alongside Alex Jones, accusing the NYT of manipulating its Best Seller list to artificially suppress the popularity of Jones' book, The Great Reset: And the War for the World.[12]

The NYT is a member of the Northeast Business Group on Health[13] and the Trusted News Initiative (TNI).[14] It is also a partner of the Global Citizen Forum[15] and The Marshall Project.[16]
