MoveOn

MoveOn (formerly known as MoveOn.org) is an American progressive political activist group based in Berkeley, California. MoveOn is made up of two primary organizations: MoveOn Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) non-profit,[1] and MoveOn Political Action, a political action committee.[2] It is also affiliated with the MoveOn Education Fund, a separate 501(c)(3) organization.[3]

History

On September 22, 1998, Wes Boyd and his wife Joan Blades published a petition calling on the United States Congress to immediately censure President Bill Clinton in order to move on from the unfolding Monica Lewinsky sex scandal.[4]

Boyd and Blades registered MoveOn PAC with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on October 29, 1998.[5]

2004 presidential election

Byron York of the National Review described MoveOn as part of a "constellation of groups" that had "come together on the left in the last year or so, all aimed at electing a Democratic president" in the 2004 presidential election, which also included America Coming Together, the Center for American Progress, Media Matters for America, and others.[6]

2020 presidential election

In February 2021, Time Magazine published an article authored by Molly Ball describing “a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes” to “fortify” the 2020 United States presidential election. MoveOn was named among the groups involved in the so-called "shadow campaign."[7]

2024 presidential election

In March 2024, MoveOn posted a job listing on GAIN Power's Career Center for a "senior level political organizer to organize and support institutions and activists to drive campaigns to help inoculate progressive and other non-MAGA constituencies from voting for [Robert F. Kennedy Jr.] and other third-party presidential spoiler candidates in key battleground states," as part of nationwide "anti-RFK Jr efforts."[8]
